POGP Research

Welcome to our Research Page

Research is vital to increasing our knowledge base. It can provide answers to questions ranging from effectiveness of treatments to how our patients feel

Do you have a question you want to find an answer to?

Introduction

We want to encourage more members to be involved in the research process. We hope you will share results of your research, whether it be a RCT, an audit or a case study. We want to promote high standards and good quality work. We especially want to encourage those who have not felt confident to begin. Research can be daunting for novices and the experienced alike. It is important to learnhow to conduct research so your efforts can produce the highest quality possible within any limitations. No matter how small your project can seem, conducted well, results can be meaningful. We hope to promote debate and the generation of new ideas.

Research theory

Getting started….

If this is all new to you here’s a few ideas to get you involved.

Why not join your hospital medical library or local university - get an Athens password.

Learn how to search in a systematic way for studies to help answer a question or on a specific topic. This way you know you’ve found all of the most relevant studies. Your librarian may run sessions to learn these skills. Read studies and discuss them with colleagues. Why not start a journal club or discuss them at a POGP regional meeting.

Learn how to read a paper and know how to assess ,amongst other factors, the internal and external validity. How reliable are the results of the study and what does it mean for your practice? This is a great skill to learn. Contact your local university. They may run a module in learning research skills.

Why not write up an excellent case study or audit for the journal or share your MSc or PhD dissertation with us.

Guidelines for writing for the journal are available in our resource section. Designing a poster can be a great way to begin sharing your work. Why not consider entering our competition see below....
